In this lengthy treatise (dated 1676), famous for its section on the lute playing, Thomas Mace (c. 1613-c. 1706) addresses a wide range of topics, including the singing of psalms in church services, the playing on the theorbo and basso continuo practice, the viola da gamba, the construction of a concert hall, and more. The author, a member of the choir at Trinity College, Cambridge, shares his views on music with the reader and offers a comprehensive lute course from beginner to master, presented through eight suites of dances notated in tablature. It is an exceptional document on music in England during the second half of the 17th century.
