Les deux recueils des Nuove Musiche (1602 et 1614) de Caccini occupent une place prépondérante au sein des nombreuses publications qui entourent la mise au point de l’opéra et du stilo rappresentativo. La composition de ces madrigaux et airs s’étend sur une période de vingt ans environ et montre un éventail remarquable d’expressions musicales.
La longue préface du premier recueil prend les allures d’un bref traité de chant, de composition et d’esthétique musicales. Caccini y relate ses propres expériences et illustre son discours d’exemples précis qui font de ce texte une référence en matière d’interprétation. Dans les compositions qui suivent, le compositeur reprend à son compte la nouvelle invention de la basse continue et choisit de grands poètes présents ou passés : Tasso, Petrarca, Rinuccini, Chiabrera ou Guarini.

The two collections named Nuove Musiche (1602 and 1614) by Caccini have a prominent place amongst the numerous publications which concern the opera and the stilo rappresentativo. These madrigals and airs were composed during a twenty years period, and show a large variety of expressions.
In a long introduction, the composer and singer explains many elements of singing and interpreting the pieces. He talk about his own experiences and illustrate his text with detailed examples, which make of this account a reference concerning vocal interpretation. In the pieces of the collection, the composer use the new invention of thorough-bass and take his texts from great Italian poets like Tasso, Petrarca, Rinuccini, Chiabrera or Guarini.
