À la suite de Louis Spohr, son mentor, Bernhard Molique (1802-1869) déploya ses facultés créatrices dans le domaine du Lied. Il en publia onze recueils au cours de sa vie et, en dehors des œuvres pour violon, dont il était un virtuose acclamé, ce domaine reste un de ceux qu’il cultiva avec bonheur. L’opus 23 est d’une importance particulière, tant par ses aspects musicaux et poétiques que par la dédicace à son épouse. Préparés et ordonnés avec soin, ces six Lieder expriment les sentiments profonds du compositeur et sont comme une fenêtre sur sa vie intime. Appartenant à la tendance classique du Romantisme allemand (aux côtés de Spohr, Mendelssohn, Marschner ou Lortzing), sa musique révèle un musicien à la technique sans faille et à la subtilité indispensable à l’expression du Lied. Installé pendant onze ans à Londres, Molique enseigna la composition au Royal College of Music et fut un acteur important de la vie musicale anglaise.

Following his teacher and model, Louis Spohr, Bernhard Molique (1802-1869) had a strong interest in the Lied. He published eleven set of songs during his lifetime, and, apart from his works for violon, of which ha was a renowned virtuoso, this genre was cultivated by him with success. The opus 23 is particularly important on two sides : first by musical and poetic aspects, second by the dedication to his wife. Carefully repared and arranged, these six songs express the composer’s deepest feelings and are like a window on his intimate life. Belonging to the classical trend of German Romanticism (along with Spohr, Mendelssohn, Marschner or Lortzing), his music reveals a musician with a flawless technique and the subtlety essential to the expression of the Lied. Living in London for eleven years, Molique taught composition at the Royal College of Music and was an important figure in English musical life.
