Composée à Londres, quelques jours avant la première de l’opéra, l’ouverture d’Oberon figure en bonne place dans le répertoire symphonique de concert aujourd’hui encore. En effet, la couleur éminemment romantique de la féerie, l’emploi du cor, l’orchestration brillante sont les éléments qui ont favorisé le succès durable de cette œuvre. Mais la mort tragique du compositeur peu après la création, a contribué également à entourer cette ouverture de l’éclat des derniers feux du génie.
La structure de sonate, alliée au réemploi des thèmes des principaux personnages de l’opéra inscrit cette pièce dans les œuvres annonciatrices du système wagnérien. D’ailleurs, le même processus avait déjà été employé par Weber dans les ouvertures du Freischütz et d’Euryanthe.
L’examen des sources et l’établissement du texte figurent au premier plan des préoccupations de cette nouvelle édition, préparée par Jean-Philippe Navarre. De plus, la préface remet l’œuvre dans son contexte historique afin d’en assurer une plus juste lecture.

Composed in London, some days before the premiere of the opera, the overture of Oberon is still today one of the most performed pieces in concert. In fact, the romantic colour of the fairyland, the sound of the magic horn and a brilliant orchestration are parts of the success of the work. Then, the tragic death of the composer in London some weeks after the premiere contributed also to give to this overture the shine of the genius.
The sonata form, masterly used in connection with the musical themas belonging to each character of the drama, announce the wagnerian system. Indeed, the same model was followed earlier by Weber in composing the famous overtures to The Freischütz and Euryanthe.
